Conservation Management

Hermanusdoorns Shareblock is committed to the long-term conservation and sustainable management of its natural resources. Annual conservation activities are carried out to maintain a healthy and balanced ecosystem while improving habitat quality for wildlife.

Bush clearing is conducted every year in selected areas to reduce bush encroachment, restore natural grasslands, improve biodiversity, and increase grazing availability for wildlife. This also allows animals to utilize areas of the farm that were previously inaccessible due to dense vegetation.

The farm continues its ongoing Flannelweed (Sida cordifolia) eradication programme. Annual spraying and follow-up treatments are undertaken to control this invasive species, preventing its spread and allowing indigenous grasses and vegetation to recover. This programme remains a high conservation priority and will continue until the infestation is effectively controlled.

Sustainable hunting forms part of the farm's wildlife management strategy. Hunting is used as a conservation tool to manage older animals and maintain healthy population numbers within the carrying capacity of the property. Income generated from hunting is reinvested directly into conservation initiatives, including the purchase of new breeding animals, habitat improvements, invasive plant control, water infrastructure maintenance, and other projects that support the long-term sustainability of the farm's ecosystem.

Through these ongoing conservation practices, Hermanusdoorns aims to protect its biodiversity, improve habitat quality, and ensure that the farm remains ecologically healthy and productive for future generations.
